Irish is getting a new PC!

Afternoon Taz, it's Chris at CJ Computing. Got a couple of different specs on machines for you.

Common components:

Intel Core i7 975 3.33Ghz Extreme Edition X58/1366

Coolermaster RC-1100 Cosmos S

Tagan PipeRock TG1300-BZ 1300w Modular BZ Series ATX Power Supply

Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA-II (Boot drive)

Either port HDDs from old machine to new, or:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB SATA-II 32MB Cache (Storage)

Port optical drives from old machine, or buy new ones.


Best possible spec currently, huge overclocking potential (some bits might not be available as of yet):


EVGA Classified Intel X58/1366 (3x 16x PCI-E, true triple SLi!)


Swiftech H2O-220 Apex Ultima Watercooling Kit - (Socket 1366) (Unsure whether this'll adapt to triple SLi, should think so though, can always buy more piping otherwise)

Zalman ZM-WB5 Plus CPU block

3x EVGA GeForce GTX 285 "Watercooled 55nm" 1024MB

Either:
2x Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000 (2000MHz)

Total component cost:
With GTX295 and air cooling: £2375
With GTX285s and air cooling: £2642
With GTX295 and water cooling: £2535
With GTX285s and water cooling: £2802

As for assembly cost, assuming overclocking and fitting water cooling, you're likely looking at somewhere around £500 due to the insane amount of time involved.

Everythign but the highlighted is good. Tell him to get the GeForce 295GTX, especially as it is better, and tell him if he can find anything more tricked out than that, then he should go with it. Also, with all these components your going to need liquid cooling. Also, if your going to get such a good computer, i would upgrade from 6gb of ram, to 8gb of ram for the greatest optimization (Unless you want like 16gb). 8GB is probably the highest you want to go, and the price will definitly be worth it as your PC will be able to last about 5+ years. Also, that i7 he is planning to put in, will make your processor as fast as a quad core, and even close to a Octa Core. With all these items, if he will not get liquid cooling, i seriously suggest a high powered fan, and since your going all out, tell him to get a REALLY quiet one.

You could build a badass rig for less than 2,000 here in the states. i7 processors are nuts. The next rig I build will have it. Once the price drops down on them. Way too pricey now.

If you are content with your current rig, I'd hold off for a few more months. I bet the prices will drop again.

Then on the other hand, my opinion is probably bias. Patience is definately not one of my qualities. Look at how I constantly rush up to TBD... lol
