| any of you math geniuses out there mind helping me with some simple algebra stuff? i have to pass a math test to get into this program at school. If i fail it, i pack up, go home, and spend the rest of my life working at a grocery store. So help would be greatly appreciated.
If anybody feels up to it, i'll be sitting in ventrilo all day.
In the meantime someone do this problem and tell me how the hell i'm supposed to get -1 when i keep getting -97:
Evaluate: 3x^2y-2y^2+5x-7 x=-2, y=4
It may seem simple to you but i'm terrible with math.

| I typed it all in my calculator and got -1.
I typed, 3(-2)^2(4)-2(4)^2+5(-2)-7 = -1
... what's the problem? lol
Make sure you're using brackets too. Or do you have to do this on paper without a calculator?

| yeah apparently i was doing it wrong by doing it in segments, anyway, that's just one of the simpler problems i have, i've got some more crap that goes into graphing and that thing that looks like a chekc mark that has to do with factoring or something. so help is still needed for anyone with time to spare | |

| well like i said it's a whole tests worth of stuff, but i'll post a couple problems here and if you can show how to solve them im sure i can figure the rest out. again, im sitting in vent if anything needs clarification. i don't know how to put certain symbols on here so i'll write out certain parts: 1) square root of: 32a^6b^7 divided by: square root of: 18a^2b 2) square root of: 4a^4 * square root of: 8b^5 3) graph the equation: y = (x-2)^2 + 1 4) graph the equation: 3 / x-2 = y + 4/2 5) simplify: 1 - 1/1! + 2/2! - 3/3! 6) find f(2) if f(x) = x^4/4 - 3x^3 + 2x 7) find f(n^r/4) if f(x) = -2 sin(2x) / 3 + 5 cos(4x) / 6 there's some triangle problem with cos, sin, and tan which i can't display here. | |

| I'm guessing you mean you need to simplify most of them and not solve. | |

| 5) simplify: 1 - 1/1! + 2/2! - 3/3!
1/2
Been a long time but is that right?

| 3) graph the equation: y = (x-2)^2 + 1 4) graph the equation: 3 / x-2 = y + 4/2 FOR GRAPHING THESE YOU NEED TO GET THEM IN THIS FORM y=mx+b form m=slope x=variable b= y intercept the reason that you need it in this form is because u always need at least one point to start your graph. Ex. so if b=3 ... the point would be (0,3) ... this also means that you would go across 0 and up 3. Ex. so if b=-3 ... the point would be (0,-3) ... this means you go across 0 and down 3. now for slope you are going to most likely see it in fraction form...ex.3/2 what this means is that from the y intercept point you go across 3 and up 2. Ex. in y=mx+b form .... y=4x=3 for this one the 3 would be your y intercept..or point (0,3) NOW FOR SLOPE... in any whole number (4) it can always be placed in a fraction such as for this one... 4/1 This would mean that from your y intercept u move across 4 and up 1. REMEMBER THOUGH THAT NEGATIVE NUMERS ARE DIFFERENT Ex. in y=mx+b form ... y=-2/3x-4 for this one -4 is your y intercept or point (0,-4) which means you move across zero and DOWN 4. now for slope....when you see a NEGATIVE SLOPE (-2/3) this means you will have a DOWNWARD SLANTING LINE this means for this equation that the negative number would imply that you move downward instead of up. SO for this example you would move from the y intercept .... right 2 and down 3. therefore your new point would be... (2,-7) Also if you get it in y=mx+b form you van put a number in for x to find the y coordinate. Ex. If y=2/3x+6 you could place the number (3) in for x .... y=2/3(3)+6 From this point your x coordinat would be 3 and now just solve the equation to find y. the 3's cancel so then you are left with y=2+6 then y=8 .....now this would be your y coordinate so then you are ready to plot this point on ur graph. which would be (3, now just plot that point ...take a ruler....match up this point (3, with ur y intercept (0,6) and draw ur line. I DIDNT KNOW IF YOU JUST COULDNT SOLVE THE EQUATION OR JUST DIDNT KNOW HOW TO GRAPH, BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT VARIABLES THAT COULD MAKE THIS HARDER, BUT IM NOT SURE IF U ARE LEARNING THAT OR NOT. JUST LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS....OTHERWISE I WILL BE ON VENT TOMORROW AROUND 12PM (NOON) CENTRAL TIME. GOOD LUCK....AND NEXT TIME PAY ATTENTION......LOL | |

| well actually the test is to earn the privilige of sitting in class. And those problems i posted from a practice test they gave us, they gave us the answers too, i just needed to know how to do the problem so i'd know how to do the ones on the actual test.
unfortunately, the test they had me take had a bunch of shit that wasn't on the practice test, so thanks anyways, i truly appreciate it.
i'll find out how i did on friday, if i missed more than 15 problems it's game over.
